As well as considering genetic diseases, breeders should also consider infectious disease screening of all breeding stock. Several infectious diseases are commonly overlooked and not ruled out in diagnosis, so it is important for puppy owners to be aware of infectious disease as well when rearing their puppy. Both Leishmaniasis and Ehrlichiosis have been noted as potentially having a high incidence in the Neapolitan Mastiff. This is most likely due to their country of origin, Italy, where both diseases are endemic.
